The Hon. Colonial Secretary,
PRESENT.

HONGKONG. 3rd. August 1918.
sir,
With reference to the Goverment's proposal
for the widening of Queen's Road East (the Plan for which
we have seen), we would strongly urge that this work be undertaken in whole forthwith and that provision be made therefore in the estimates for next year.
To carry out the scheme piecemeal as owners pull down or property is destroyed by fire would, in our
opinion, mean the postponement thereof for an indefinite
period, and it might well be 20 or 30 years hence before
the whole scheme were completed.
That such an improvement in this congested
thoroughfare is much needed, there can be no manner of
doubt, and we think that the additional cost involved by
ite immediate performance is fully warranted in the present
state of the Colony's finance, such difference being, we
understand, not more than £200,000 over the estimate for a
piecemeal job.
We should also like to enquire what steps,
if any, it is proposed to take in the near future for the widening of the Shaukiwan Road from Causeway Bay onward,
a very much needed improvement in these days.
We have, loạ
